Muscle Sparing Total Knee Replacement
Advances in medical technology have made joint replacement a highly effective option to treat chronic joint pain from arthritis and other degenerative joint diseases or injury.
Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center offers muscle sparing total knee replacements for patients. This procedure may mean less pain and a faster recovery. During traditional knee replacement procedures, muscles are cut so the surgeon has access to the knee so a replacement can be done.
In a muscle sparing procedure, the surgeon does not cut the muscle. Instead surgeons are able to move the tendon and muscle to the side and replace the knee joint. By not having their muscles or tendons cut, patients have often experienced less pain and shorter recovery times. This may also mean that the surgeon is able to help patients manage pain without the prescribing opioids.
