2011 National Volunteer Week

Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center Celebrates National Volunteer Week

EMPORIA, VA (April 7, 2011) – It’s been said that many hands make light work – one of the many reasons that volunteers are a valued part of Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center (SVRMC). Volunteers are integral to the hospital’s mission which is to meet our communities’ health needs by exceeding our customers expectations during every encounter experienced at Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center.

During National Volunteer Week, April 10 - 16, SVRMC recognizes the many contributions that these important individuals make year-round. Currently, SVRMC has three different adult volunteer groups including the SVRMC Auxiliary, Inc., the SVRMC Volunteers, and the SVRMC Volunteer Chaplains. Combined, these individual adult volunteers donated more than 5000 hours in 2010. In addition to these groups, there are also volunteer opportunities each summer for area students between the ages of 14 and 18. Last year alone, the ten students who participated in the SVRMC Teen Volunteer Program contributed 1376.5 hours in a program that last about 45 days. Volunteers are utilized to assist patients and staff members throughout the hospital with tasks including office work such as filing, assisting with supplies, patient escort and other special projects.

“A strong base of volunteers is essential to a community hospital,” said Brit Phelps, Chief Executive Officer of SVRMC. “These caring and generous individuals lend their time and talents and we are truly grateful for all they do to enrich the lives of our patients, visitors and staff,” said Phelps.

There’s no doubt that volunteers make a difference in the lives of the people they encounter. If you would like to join one of our volunteer organizations, or for additional information, contact Tracy Mitchell, Director of Volunteer Services, at 434-348-4455. “Never doubt that a small group of committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead
