Accommodations

Patient’s Room
Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center is committed to making your hospital stay as comfortable as possible, with many amenities to meet your needs.  Each room has a nurse-call system that is monitored 24 hours a day.  Upon arrival, a nurse will show you how to operate the call system, the electric bed and the color television.  There is also a call system in the bathroom.

Telephone
Local calls can be made by dialing 9 followed by the number you wish to call.  All long-distance calls must be charged to your home phone number, your calling card or you may call collect.  To make a long distance call, dial 9 then 0 followed by the area code and the number.  Your room can be called from outside the hospital by dialing the number printed on the phone.  Incoming calls cannot however be received between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.  You may call out at any time.  TDD is available for the hearing impaired.

Television
Each room has a color TV.  We are connected to local cablevision for your viewing pleasure.

Smoking
Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center is a smoke-free hospital. Patients must have a written order by their physician in order to smoke in the designated area outside the facility.

Meals
Your meals are provided in your room three times a day.  You will be visited by a dietary host or hostess for your meal selection prior to each meal.  Please ask your nurse if you would like to change your meal  or if you would like a snack between meals.

Personal Items
You will need very few personal items during your hospital stay.  We suggest you bring a bathrobe, bedroom slippers, nightgown or pajamas and personal toiletry items.

Valuables
We urge you to leave large sums of money, jewelry and other valuables at home, as the hospital shall not be responsible for these items.  You may wish to keep a small amount of money to purchase newspapers, magazines, etc.  Dentures, removable bridges, eyeglasses, contact lenses or hearing aids should be placed in protective containers when not in use.  The hospital is not responsible for these items during your stay.

Medications
Personal medications should not be kept in your  room; therefore please send your personal medications home or give them to the personnel at the nursing station.  All drugs must be dispensed by the pharmacist and administered to you by your nurse.  This is to assure that you receive the proper medication at the proper time and there is no conflict in the medication you are receiving.

Safety Tips

To ensure your stay with us is not only comfortable but also safe, we ask that you please follow these important safety tips:

• Please wear slippers or shoes whenever you are out of the bed.  If you do not have slippers with you, please ask your nurse for a pair of disposable slippers.
• Allow our staff to assist you in and out of a wheelchair.
• Promptly inform our staff if any equipment in your room is nor working properly.
• If you bring personal electrical equipment (such as hair dryers, razors, etc.) please tell your nurse and we will arrange a safety check to ensure that it does not electrically interfere with vital hospital equipment.  Because of the possibility of electric chock, never use any electrical appliance near water.
• Inform your nurse or physician of any medicine or drugs you have brought from home, and tell them of any drugs you were taking at home before your hospital admission and if you have any known allergies.  If you have brought drugs from home, you will be asked by your nurse to have someone take them home or they will be secured in our pharmacy for safe keeping until you are discharged.
• All hospital employees have identification badges.  Patients should notify a nurse if they notice any suspicious persons.
• If it is necessary for you to leave your room and your physician has given consent, please notify the nurse, who will arrange an escort for you.
• Hospitals are required to conduct routine fire disaster drills.  These mock drills involve various alarms, automatic door closures, and response procedures practiced for your safety.  In the unlikely event of a real emergency, our staff is well trained and will instruct and assist you.
• Please do not use a cellular phone inside the hospital at any time.
• Cars left in the parking lot should be locked at all times.
• Valuables should be placed out of view.
